About Us
Phoenix is Ottawa and North-Eastern Ontario's, premier ultimate team. Moving apace with the rapid growth in participation of this fast paced and exciting skill sport, Phoenix has improved to the point of top tier status in World Ultimate. With the largest community league and only ultimate owned facility in the world, Ottawa has proven that it can support a top level team.
Phoenix began, as the legend goes, with a re-birth from the ashes of WaX, a storied and successful ultimate franchise that won many tournaments representing Ottawa in days past. Led initially by a combination of WaX veterans and youthful talent including World Junior's superstar Derek Alexander, Phoenix found moderate success from day one. The past eight seasons have seen multiple re-births; each time seeing the team rise higher to the next level of competition.
This year Phoenix hopes to continue the rise that they have experienced since a re-birth following a disappointing fifth place finish at the Canadian Ultimate Championships (CUC) in Calgary two seasons ago. Last year's results did continue to improve, culminating in a disappointing second place finish to rivals Montreal at the CUC in Winnipeg. Though disappointing to lose to a Montreal team against whom Phoenix had a winning record during the season, this result did mark the highest that Phoenix has risen.
With the second place finish Phoenix earned the right to represent Canada at this summer's World Ultimate Club Championships in Prague Czech Replublic. A successful showing in Prague will certainly add to the momentum of this reincarnation of Phoenix, and with the continued leadership of Jamie Craig, Derek's older brother, Phoenix hopes that this year's CUC in Sherbrooke will be the one they have been waiting for.
Phoenix also competes in the Ultimate Players Association club series in the fall, facing up against the best teams in North America. Though results last fall in Boston were less than expected, an upward trend continues, and opponents have certainly taken notice.
